Today, we’re talking about how to clean mini blinds and keep them looking like new.

How are Hunter Douglas Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds Different?

We’re going to tell you how to clean mini blinds in general. Still, it’s essential to know that if you have very old blinds, they might not hold up as well as Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds, which are made of resilient aluminum and use smooth operating hardware to keep them in top shape. Since these blinds are stronger, it’s easier to maintain them with regular light cleaning without worrying about bending them with the slightest touch or lift. Be mindful of your other, older blinds when cleaning them, as we cannot guarantee their ability to maintain their shape.

Regular Cleaning for Mini Blinds

The easiest way to clean your mini blinds is to lightly clean them regularly. A light dusting with a feather or similar duster once or twice a week (or more if you live in a home with pets) is usually all it takes.

  1. Lower your mini blinds all the way down and close the slats to create a solid front.
  2. Dust starting at the top and work your way down along this surface.
  3. Next, keep the blinds lowered but rotate the slats almost all the way upward. This way, your duster will get the back side and the edges, which would be overlapped when entirely closed.
  4. Don’t forget to dust the hardware and cords and your window frame.

Spot Cleaning Your Mini Blinds

Accidents and messes happen to us all. If your blinds get a spot of food, liquid, etc., on them, it’s preferable to clean them as soon as possible; that way, you don’t need to hunt down any product and can easily wipe them clean. If you do need a stronger approach, you can find household blind cleaners in most stores. Use a soft microfiber cloth dampened with the product to gently remove the mess.

This might be a good time to check the edges of the blinds or the corners of your window frame and sill in case thicker dust has accumulated, needing a bit of a wipe in between regular dustings.

Cleaning Your Mini Blinds in the Tub

It’s possible your mini blinds might occasionally require a deep clean. Perhaps you’re doing a whole house deep clean for Spring, or you’ve been away for a while. In that case, you can remove the blinds and submerge them in water in your bathtub. Please note this advice is for most aluminum blinds. Please check with your manufacturer instructions before cleaning. Here are the proper steps for doing so:

  • Remove the entire set of blinds and lay them in the bathtub.
  • Run warm water to fill the tub just over the blinds.
  • Use your hand to gently move water around the slats, letting the water loosen any debris.
  • Use a very mild detergent if needed. Make certain cleaning products are safe for your blinds’ material and do not void any warranties.
  • Drain the water and refill if very dirty.
  • Once blinds are clean, rinse with clean water until water runs clear.
  • Tilt the blinds back and forth over the tub, letting excess water drain from the slats and rail.
  • Hang the clean mini blinds back up but lower them down all the way so they can dry thoroughly in the sun.
