Inside Mount Vs. Outside Mount Roman Shades

Roman shades are a stylish and elegant way to cover your windows and add privacy to your home. These window coverings come in many different styles, but you may not often hear about the different options you have in mourning these treatments. Sure, there are many different fabrics and folds to choose from, but you can also decide between mounting these treatments inside or outside. In this post, we'll explain what each style is and when you should consider using them.

What’s the Difference?

With all of the different terms and phrases thrown around in the design world, if you aren’t an expert or are relatively new, you may not even know the difference between an inside mount and an outside mount when it comes to window treatments.

Inside-mount Roman shades are installed inside the window frame, so they don't cover the entire window like an outside-mount shade would. They sit inside the framing of the window and do not go outside of that area. On the other hand, outside mount shades are mounted outside of this frame, usually above. This allows these kinds of window treatments to cover the entire window, with fabric hanging over all sides of the window.

Inside Mount Roman Shades

Inside-mount Roman shades are installed inside the window frame, so they don't cover the entire window like an outside-mount shade would. This means they are smaller overall, making them better for smaller rooms. They are also easier to install, as you only have to attach them to the window casing. And since they stay within the window frame, you can show off the rest of the window.

One of our favorite styles of Roman Shades for Inside mounting are the Hunter Douglas Solera® Roman Shades. These shades are not only beautiful, but their cellular design makes them great insulators too. Putting them close to your windows means you’ll have better energy efficiency with improved insulation!

Outside Mount Roman Shades

Outside mount Roman shades cover the entire window, with fabric hanging over all sides of the window. This lets you get bigger window treatments, so if you are looking for flowing folds of fabric, you’ll want to go for outside-mounted shades. These shades can also block more light and sound, making them a better choice for rooms where you need darkness and quiet.

Outside mount shades also fit better for windows with shallow window frames that don’t have much space for window treatments. They also can be less of a hassle to install, as you don’t have to worry about measurements as much. With all the space around the window you have, unlike the tight spaces for inside mount, you can have some more wiggle room.
